Brew Guide

French Press

The French Press is a fool-proof method of immersion brewing that’s perfect for larger groups, or when one cup just won’t cut it.

With the first patent dating back to 1928 and widely considered one of the most underrated brewers. The French Press is an incredibly easy brewer producing a rich, full bodied cup.

What you need

  • 45g fresh whole bean coffee
  • Soft, clean water
  • French Press
  • Grinder
  • 2 spoons
  • Scales and timer
  • Decanter

Step by Step

Step 1

Boil your water and add a bit to the French press and decanter to pre heat both.

Step 2

Weight out and grind your coffee. Aiming for a coarse sea salt like texture.

Step 3

Discard the water used to preheat the French Press and decanter. Add the coffee to the French press and place it on the scales, making sure to zero off the scales.

Step 4

The water should be at 93 degrees, or just off the boil.

Start your timer and add the water pouring in steady concentric circles, making sure not to leave any dry patches, until the scales read 750g.

Let the coffee sit for 3 minutes.

Step 5

A thick layer of “crust” will have appeared on the top of the coffee. Using the back of a spoon, gently break the crust. Most of the coffee will sink to the bottom of the French Press.

Step 6

Using 2 spoons, gently scrape off the excess slurry and let the coffee sit for 7 minutes.

Step 7

Gently place the plunger on top of the French Press and set the plunger a few cm into the brewer.

Step 8

Pour out the coffee into the decanter and enjoy!
